Ableism to Empowerment: Navigating School Structures When Working With Students Who Stutter January 6th, 2023 School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) face uniquely complex webs of guidelines and criteria that can undermine their ability to move toward disability-affirming practices. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to present a contrast between ableist and disability-affirming practices in school-based stuttering therapy while highlighting the critical perspectives of students who stutter. Practical examples of disability-affirming stuttering therapy in public school settings are provided.
History Taking As Formal/Informal Assessment Method: A Perspective Of Healthcare Professionals January 6th, 2023 History taking is an integral part of assessment. History taking is basically collecting reliable and valid information from your patient. The objective of this study was to assess the perception of healthcare professionals regarding history taking as formal or informal assessment. A qualitative study design was used for this study. In this explanatory study design researcher developed the holistic picture based on the reported information.
Experiences and Perceptions of School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists Related to Literacy: Results From a National Survey January 6th, 2023 School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in supporting children with reading and writing difficulties. The purpose of this study was to describe the training, experiences, and knowledge of SLPs who work in preschool, elementary school, or middle/high school settings in relation to children with reading and writing difficulties.
Medications Adverse Effects on Voice: Comparison Between Different Sources of Information January 5th, 2023 The analysis of drugs with adverse effects on voice provides relevant data for the vocal clinic. It is essential that professionals involved in voice care are aligned on the topic of voice pharmacovigilance in order to understand adverse effects from safe and reliable sources.
Longitudinal Vocal Outcomes and Voice-Related Quality of Life After Selective Bilateral Laryngeal Reinnervation: A Case Study January 5th, 2023 Bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) is a severe disorder that can result in respiratory, swallowing, and voice-related problems. Most surgical treatments do not restore laryngeal function and often need to compromise voice quality to preserve respiratory function. Laryngeal reinnervation (LR) may offer a solution to this problem, but literature on longitudinal outcomes of this procedure is scarce. This study aims to report the longitudinal vocal outcomes of BVFP after LR and subsequent voice therapy.
Three-Dimensional Speech Profiles in Stroke Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech January 5th, 2023 Behaviorally, acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) is a multidimensional syndrome that the experienced clinician recognizes based on impaired articulation and abnormal temporal prosody. We conducted this study to determine the extent to which three core features of AOS—when defined quantitatively—distinguish categorically among aphasia with no or minimal speech sound involvement, aphasia with AOS, and aphasia with phonemic paraphasia (APP).
Speech Sound Development in 18-Month-Old Children With Sex Chromosome Trisomies January 5th, 2023 This study aimed to describe speech sound development in a group of 18-month-old children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs), compared with a group of typically developing (TD) peers. Concurrent and longitudinal relationships between speech sound abilities and lexical development were examined.

Federal Public Health Emergency Updates for 2023 January 11th, 2023 The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must renew the federal public health emergency (PHE) related to COVID-19 every 90 days to maintain certain health care flexibilities and waivers. The PHE has been in place since January 27, 2020, and renewed throughout the pandemic. The latest HHS extension for the PHE is effective through April 11, 2023. In a letter to the state Governors, the Administration has pledged to give at least a 60-day notice before the PHE ends. In addition, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (P.L. 117-328), extends the authority for audiologists and speech-language pathologists to provide telehealth services to Medicare beneficiaries and continues waivers of geographic and originating site restrictions through December 31, 2024.

$6.5M Grant Awarded to Special Needs Network for Critical New Workforce Development January 10, 2023 Using $6.5 million in one-time federal American Rescue Plan Act funds, the Special Needs Network will address critical shortages in diverse professionals providing services to children with autism and other developmental disabilities who are members of racial or ethnic minority groups.
